2025 Terry Anderson Scholarship: Deadline May 15

The Warwick Town Democratic Committee will hold an essay contest for graduating seniors. The winner will receive the Terry Anderson Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually by the committee in memory of Terry Anderson.

Terry Anderson, award-winning journalist and late member of the Warwick Democrats

Before he passed away in April of 2024, Terry Anderson was an award-winning journalist who spent more than six years as a hostage in Lebanon in the late 1980s. He was also a Marine veteran and taught journalism to college students. After his release, Terry said that he forgave his captors, and wrote a best-selling book about his experience. Terry moved to Greenwood Lake late in life, and quickly became a member and leading voice on the Warwick Town Democratic Committee. This scholarship recognizes his various commitments to the written word, to education, and to democracy.

This year’s scholarship will be $500, thanks in part to a generous donor who matched the committee’s usual $250. To qualify, students should live in the Town of Warwick OR attend Warwick High School, and expect to graduate from high school in 2025. Essays must be at least 500 words in length and address the topic, “The role of activism in your life.”

The committee welcomes alternative forms of expression including video essays, poetry, visual arts, etc. Entries should be submitted using our online form or emailed to warwicknydems@gmail.com, and any questions should also be directed to that email address.

The deadline for applications is May 15, 2025.
